Meditation for Stress

Practical tools for everyday stress

Everyday stress from work, studies or family is something most people live with. Breathing and meditation are practical tools many people use to handle it better.

QUICK ANSWER

How does meditation support stress management?

Meditation and slow breathing give the mind a regular pause and may help the body shift out of a "fight-or-flight" state. Research reviews have found that meditation programs and breathwork are associated with modest reductions in self-reported stress and anxiety. They work best as a regular daily practice, alongside sleep, exercise and support from others.

Quick techniques for stressful moments

  • Extended exhale: breathe in for four counts, out for six, for two minutes.
  • Name it: silently note "this is stress". Naming a feeling can create a little distance from it.
  • Drop the shoulders: relax your jaw, shoulders and hands, then take three slow breaths.
  • Short walk: a few minutes outside, paying attention to your steps and surroundings.

Building a daily practice

A short daily routine of 10–20 minutes of breathing practice followed by meditation is more useful than an occasional long session. Many people practise in the morning before the day's pressures begin.

Work stress

Brief pauses between tasks, a few slow breaths before meetings and a clear end-of-day routine can help.

Exam stress

For students, a few minutes of slow breathing before studying or an exam may help settle nerves. See also meditation for focus.

What research shows

A 2014 review in JAMA Internal Medicine found moderate evidence that meditation programs reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, and lower-strength evidence for reducing stress itself. A 2023 meta-analysis found breathwork was associated with lower self-reported stress than control conditions. Research on Sudarshan Kriya™ has also investigated stress-related outcomes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How quickly can breathing exercises reduce stress?

Many people feel calmer after a few minutes of slow breathing. Longer-term benefits usually come from regular practice.

Is meditation enough to manage serious stress?

Not on its own. If stress is severe, persistent or affecting daily life, please speak to a doctor or mental-health professional. Meditation can complement that support.
