Meditation for Overthinking

Stepping out of the loop of racing thoughts

Overthinking means going round and round the same worries or replaying conversations. Meditation does not stop thoughts, but it can change your relationship with them.

QUICK ANSWER

How do I stop overthinking?

You can't switch thoughts off, but you can stop feeding them. Notice when you are looping, label it "thinking", and bring your attention back to the breath or your senses. Done regularly, this weakens the pull of repetitive thoughts. A 2013 systematic review found mindfulness-based approaches can reduce rumination and worry.

A 5-minute practice for racing thoughts

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  2. Take five slow breaths, lengthening the exhale.
  3. Rest your attention on the breath at the nostrils.
  4. Each time a thought pulls you away, silently say "thinking" and return.
  5. Finish by noticing three sounds around you before opening your eyes.

Why it helps

Overthinking feeds on attention. Mindfulness trains you to see thoughts as passing events rather than instructions, and slow breathing calms the physical restlessness that often comes with worry. Many people find structured breathing practices such as Sudarshan Kriya™ make it easier to settle into meditation.

Daily habits

Set a short "worry time" to write concerns down, keep a regular meditation slot, and move your body daily. If worry is constant and affecting your life, speak to a professional. See also meditation for anxiety.
