GUIDE
Meditation for Beginners
What meditation is, and how to start
Meditation (ध्यान, dhyan) is the practice of resting attention and letting the mind settle. This guide covers what it is, what research has found, and simple ways to begin.
What is meditation?
Meditation is a set of practices for training attention and awareness so the mind can become calmer and clearer. Common approaches include focusing on the breath, following a guided meditation, or resting in silence. Research suggests regular meditation may support stress management and emotional wellbeing. It is easiest to learn step by step from a teacher.
What are the benefits of meditation?
Meditation has been widely studied. A large 2014 review in JAMA Internal Medicine found moderate evidence that mindfulness meditation programs can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms and pain, and lower-strength evidence for stress. Other research has explored its role in sleep, focus and emotional regulation.
Effects vary from person to person and depend on regular practice. Meditation is a complementary wellbeing practice. It does not replace medical or psychological treatment.
How to start meditating
- Pick a time. Morning or early evening works for most people.
- Sit comfortably on a chair or cushion, back upright but relaxed.
- Take a few slow breaths and let your body settle.
- Rest your attention on the breath, or follow a guided meditation.
- When thoughts come, let them pass and gently return. This returning is the practice.
- Start small: 5–10 minutes a day is a good beginning.
Many people find meditation easier after a few minutes of breathing practice.
How long does it take to learn meditation?
You can learn the basics in a few days. The 6-day Happiness Program is designed to give beginners a complete daily practice. Like any skill, meditation deepens with regular practice over weeks and months.
